This company is an extension of me, born from a long and tumultuous journey of inner exploration. It is a melding of my childhood dreams and my adult manifestations. Thus, I felt the name of the company should be representative of that reality, and that it should come from a place that holds a lot of meaning for me.
I have always loved Celtic mythology, but it isn’t just a love. It is a pull, constant and always seething slightly under the surface. It is a huge part of who I am, although I am admittedly not as knowledgeable as some on the subject. When I was nearing the end of my pregnancy with my daughter, I chose to name her after a Celtic goddess, Cerridwyn, tender of the cauldron of wisdom, knowledge, and divine inspiration.
Shortly after her birth, I started to dabble in editing and ghostwriting, and I realized that my love of the written word had not faded over the years. As a child, I always dreamed of becoming a writer, and I was writing my own books when I was as young as six years old. Somehow, I managed to convince myself that dream was out of reach, and I never seriously pursued it. Yet, my love of the written word continued to be a nagging presence in my life that couldn’t be ignored. I realized I had a knack for turning the thoughts and ideas of others into something that could be shared with and enjoyed by others. Over the course of about a year, it became clear to me that I wanted to help others write and publish their novels.
Why Awen? I wanted a name that would embody what I hoped my company could provide for people, while also remaining a significant part of who I actually am as a person. Awen is a Celtic idea that translates directly as “fluid spirit”, or “flowing inspiration”. It is a deep and spiritual connection to creativity. It is your muse, your divine illumination. Additionally, Awen comes from the cauldron of Cerridwyn. Since the presence of my daughter in my life inspired me to start this company, I felt this was fitting. Awen embodies my goals and my direction, both with my company and my life. It holds great meaning for me, and I hope it comes to hold great meaning for those I work with.
